Seasons in East TN: almost summer, summer, still summer and Christmas.
OMG! Ain't it the truth. Another co-worker's going on Alaskan cruise next month--sounds mighty invitin' and will sound even better as we seek relief in this smelting furnace we live in.
I can remember days before AC; you used fans, opened windows, closed blinds and drapes, sipped cool drinks and tried to stay out of the sun. When I was a kid the only places with AC were movie theaters (signs advertised it was cooool inside) and chain grocery stores. Made you want to go to the movie and then grocery shopping and stay a long time.
Conditioning has made us weaker, certainly more vulnerable to weather. Add aging to that formula and it ain't a pretty picture. If I didn't have AC at home, I'd move into my office, or go to a hotel. If I didn't have AC at the office, I'd go home, or to a hotel.
One summer, several years back, Rosey arranged for exchange student to spend summer with us. What a kid! Anyway my car was reliable transportaiton but didn't have AC; we toughed it out but it was mighty uncomfortable. We took our visitor to upper East TN, NC, Ohio and Tallahassee, FL visiting friends and family with us (to show her more of our country). On one of those wonderful trips I recall pouring ice water on my head and face because I was so DAMN hot being wet seemed a fine alternative.
I'm of the opinion that air blowing in the car from the highway is just HOT AIR. It does not cool you, it just blows the heat around. Yep, if I didn't have AC in the car I'd stay home.
As I said this winter, during the summer heat I need to remember how miserable the winter was. That memory is fading in the glare of summer; in a few more weeks I'll, no doubt, be praying for early fall and a real winter. SO if you get sick of shoveling snow in January, I'm sorry; I just really dislike hot weather.
