because I work in a local bureaucracy, sometimes it really doesn't make sense. Must renew my driver's license by next Tuesday and went to County Clerk's office at courthouse to do so.
I'd received renewal form in mail and, since I can walk to the courthouse from my office, took the part of form to submit with my check made out for amount indicated on form. I wait my turn at Clerk's office, as I expected to do, and when I was called to counter learned that (1) I should have brought top portion of form as well (though it was unclear why), and (2) the amount due is actually $23.50 although paperwork from State indicated $19.50. So my check made out for $19.50 would not suffice and I would have to return with another check, or an additional $4 and wait my turn again.
The polite lady at the counter was not at fault, and I had not erred as far as I can tell. I thought I was doing as requested/instructed. Nevertheless, I must do it all over again.
Why would the State of TN send out a form that carries inaccurate information? OR why is Knox Co collecting an additional $4 that is added at the point of renewal? Wonder what would have happened if I'd mailed the form and check, which is an option if one acts timely. Would I receive a notice to send additional $4 and then I'd get my new license? Would someone waive the $4 but send a warning of my error?
I do not have bona fide answers, but I suspect nobody cares about the public customer and the problems they encounter. And that's infuriating. It's also a good lesson for those of us working in the public sector--try to do the job correctly, politely and without inconveniencing the customer.
As soon as I'm less annoyed and have another 30 minutes to sit in that office, I'll take my checkbook and try again. I hope it doesn't take the entire three days to complete.
