but I think the dinner and movie were still good things. AND we split a slice of yummy cake after a really good dinner. Good food and good company; that's what it's about.
AND, if you're wondering about Crazy Heart, just go see it. Quite good. Just a good story with good performances.
Then another friend called Saturday and we made plans to have lunch and a movie Sunday. That worked out nicely, too. Nice Italian food for lunch and then An Education for the movie. Also quite good. Just another good story.
Think I like the well-told stories much more than giant events presented in epic scope. I like words and am very interested in how they're used. A story that's put together well and presented nicely is a wonderful thing.
In the last few weeks, I've seen A Single Man (sad but so well done), in addition to Crazy Heart, An Education and piles of previews. I'm fairly clear on the movies I'm not interested in seeing; they involve violence and stories based on real events from a terrible world. Cowardly? Probably. Don't care; it's my choice.
Still on my list of must sees: Nine, Avatar, Blind Side, The Last Station and some others I've forgotten (but will recall). A co-worker suggested that Cameron spent about $200 on the script for Avatar and the remaining billions on the special effects, which is exactly what I expected. BUT I'll see it so I can say I did.
I also saw Into the Woods on DVD. One of those shows I'd missed until now. Liked it so much; nice expansion of the fairy tales. Good performances and well-written scripts are such joyful experiences.
And when you share those with a good friend, it's truly wonderful.
