political babble. Has been my choice; not forced to do it. Told a co-worker recently I did it to gather ammunition for conversations with Big Bro. I love the guy; he's a wonderful Big Bro. But he and I stand on opposite sides of center looking at each other and wondering how the other got over there.
He describes himself as right of Attila the Hun; I think that's a slight exaggeration. I am, compared to him at least, a flaming liberal. Actually, I move toward center ever so slightly with each passing year or event.
Anyway, since I have been watching commentary (sure they all discuss daily events and that much may be 'news' or 'reporting' but they are ALL opining) I'm keeping up to some extent with the political issues.
Frankly and unfortunately, some of the issues of the day amaze me. Some folk would have us go back to yesteryear, those wonderful days when men were men and women were women ..... I cannot agree with this. And I'm not discussing the economy here.
There are candidates for national office and lowly state legislatures that are proposing laws that will put women in difficult places regarding their health and insurance coverage. I truly cannot understand why there are people who think birth control should not be universally available and that legislation should decide how I manage my own body.
Yes; I am pro-choice, but I am pro-choice from the pro-life side. I mean, I personally wish women would not have abortions. But I cannot tell someone else what choice to make because I am not in another person's situation and don't have to handle her problems. I do not believe abortion should be used as birth control; that's irresponsible, perhaps immoral and unnecessary.
AND here's the thing; birth control will reduce numbers of abortions. AND the other thing that really gripes me is that insurance providers and employer-provided insurance programs may cover drugs for erectile dysfunction for men. IF they will cover such drugs for men, they should absolutely have to provide birth control as an option for women.
I am personally disappointed, disgusted even, with my home state Virginia. They have passed law that will require women to have ultrasounds before they can get an abortion. That puts the woman and her doctor in untenable situation; even if an ultrasound is not medically necessary the doctor must still do it, under this law.
I understand Texas has passed or is considering such legislation along with another southern state, Alabama maybe, and Pennsylvania. These states have legislatures with Republican majorities. I have a strong personal opinion about why this is. It's the same old BOMFOG; it's a means of elevating men by putting women down.
I propose that women across this country use the method described in the Greek play Lysistrata: women refuse sexual encounters until the men stop fighting the war. And I think it is war. War against sanity, responsibility, designed to reduce women's rights in this country.
And the other way; the viable way to stop this madness? Women in this country must remember that elections are decided by the folk who come out and vote; we've got to vote in November. Even if you disagree with me (and as hard as it is for me to believe there are women who agree with the guys) PLEASE vote.
