Monday morning musings

that don't matter much . . . weather is simply glorious. Yes, some folk have pulled out the sweaters and coats; but isn't it beautifully fresh and invigorating compared to the heavy, stifling heat of summer!

Books are a very important part of my daily life; I always have a book with me, whether bound paper or Kindle version. Have learned through practice that being immersed in a good book frees me from oppressing stress and makes things around me clearer.

And to watch a well-made film is such rich pleasure. The content of the film is important but is not as important as production values regarding direction, visual images and use of language, just to mention a few. So I'm enjoying documentaries, comedies, dramas and other genres hungrily.

I really like reading a book and then seeing the film adaptation. That was one of the pleasures of seeing The Help recently; how marvelous that the book and the film are both very good.

It dawned on me in the last several days that my time when I retire is working itself out in the lists of books and movies I plan to enjoy. I have 400+ films on my Netflix queue and about that many books on various lists*. And since someone is creating new films and writing more books constantly, there's no end in sight.

As Frank Zappa said, "So many books, so little time." Think you can say the same about movies. And, since I really enjoy old films, I could probably watch a couple every day for a long time.

Had the pleasure of seeing a good performance by the KSO Pops and Michael Feinstein. He's a small guy so it's really something to see and hear that voice come out. Discovered couple of nice ladies sitting beside me, so there'll be pleasant company before the Pops concerts this season.

To top off a very nice week end neighbors dined with me last night. It's really a treat to cook for nice folk and to sup together.  But as a footnote to any eating event, eat slowly and chew your food carefully; no one wants to deal with an episode of choking.
