how wonderful my vacation on the Outer Banks was, but I'll still try. We were in a house directly on the ocean and saw and heard the waves throughout our stay. I find the water mesmerizing and could have spent all the time there at the water's edge, on the deck, or inside.
The weather was grand and glorious, warm and windy and sunny. Couple of days were very warm, but the continuous breeze and adequate shade amply counteracted the air temperatures in the 90's. Besides, being in comfortable clothes, including sandals and hats, and applying sun screen overcame our concerns.
As much as I loved the sound of the surf, and the relaxed mood it offered, I did not sit at the house the whole time. I went with comrades to places of interest and enjoyed it all. We saw the lighthouses on the Banks, except for Cedar Island or Ocracoke. We toured the Elizabethan gardens. We took a jeep tour to see the ponies in Corolla and Currituck area; driving on the beach and seeing the horses was quite interesting. The most entertaining part, I believe, were the poor fools who had driven on the beach and gotten their cars stuck, no dug into, sand. They just shouldn't have gone out in their cars or trucks that didn't have sufficient clearance from the under carriage and weren't 4x drive.
We were on a safari truck with a tour guide who knew how to drive on the beach; it is not a smooth and easy trip, but it's worth the cost and the ride. On our return our driver stopped to help another 4x out of the rut they were in. That assistance worked and the other driver was out of trouble. Trying to help a second driver proved pointless so he was advised to call a tow truck and we didn't stop for several others in like situations. Some people won't believe what you tell them; they learn it the hard way.
We got to the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum, so named after the area off shore where so many ships have faltered, grounded and been lost. There's an interesting history of sailing and shipping and the dangers of these waters.
We ate wonderful food, at restaurants and some we prepared. Having fresh seafood available really is marvelous. One night we went to a seafood market and picked up shrimp they steamed for us and scallops we took back to the house and pan fried according to instructions. We added a salad, roasted some potatoes and green beans and it was scrumptious.
The amount of walking helped counteract the amount of food we consumed, and we were active the whole week; it was a vacation of doing, more than being, but it was very enjoyable. I'm ready to plan the next one. Matter of fact we spoke of the potential pleasure of living and working on the Banks because it seemed being a 'banker' would be a wonderful life.
Well, a girl's gotta dream.
