and this a.m. I was reminded of times when things weren't as good. Driving to work in my late model and reliable car, something brought to mind a car we had a long time ago. After divorce from husband and father of my children, bought a used car. Didn't make a very good selection, but I was broke and didn't have much to choose from.
The old VW bug was road weary and ailing, but we kept it going for quite a while. One of its problems engendered its nickname, Honky Donky, because the horn would blow whenever I turned a corner. Most of the time that was amusing; sometimes it was quite disgruntling. Also, the driver's seat would slip off the track, and on one occasion dumped the driver (ME!) almost on my head (backwards).
Lying on your back or head in the back seat is a very poor way to drive; thankfully I managed to pull over, stop and get back in place. It seemed amusing at the time since no one was injured.
Then there was the time I was taking elder child to a performance of her little theatre group at a local country club. She advised me to pull up at the driveway entrance and let her out but NOT to go up to the door; she'd walk up the drive thank you very much so no one would see what she arrived in. Well, 12-year-old girls are sensitive.
SO I still buy used cars, but they're in much better condition now when I get them. Guess I'm fortunate and glad to not care about cars, except to have transportation.
Couple of those old cars I owned got us from place to place, and occasionally longer-distanced trips to visit family and friends. Sometimes we had only enough money for gas to get to destination. We never got stranded or lost; we somehow got back home. Call it luck, call it great blessing; I'm mighty grateful.
