If you know any dog psychiatrists, please send

along the information. Duct Doctors came in Wednesday and cleaned out my ducts; that is, the ducts in the HVAC system in the house. My ducts were fine, thank you. AND, no D, I did not have a sick mallard.

Anyway, the ducts have been cleaned out; but the dogs are worse for the wear of having several guys going from room to room with equipment, making lots of noise and creating anxiety for the pooches. They do not take well to strangers, especially when they seem to be all over the dogs' territory.

Shut them in one bedroom and then switched to another so all the vents could be cleaned and serviced. Didn't let them out until the truck was leaving the driveway; they came creeping out of the bedroom, sniffing and looking cautiously around, obviously pleased that the interlopers were gone.

Took them a while, nonetheless, to settle down and feel at ease on the bed or the sofa. But peace did ensue and I was able to leave them without much worry when I left for work. They were probably glad to have me gone so NO one was afoot and interfering in their rest.

I have a feeling if someone did enter the house uninvited, the dogs would retreat to the farthest corner (which might be the other side of the back yard), but they would leave protesting loudly the presence of anyone they don't know. They can raise quite a ruckus whether it's warranted or not.

Matter of fact, they react strongly to friends who come in, visitors with whom they are not yet well acquainted. I find myself explaining every time that one dog is rescued and doesn't trust people and the other one is just nervous and doesn't trust people. IF folk come around enough, however, the dogs will remember them and slowly adjust and might even accept them and like them. So there's hope.

Lucky for me that's true; since close friend has agreed to come around throughout the week I'm going to be in NC visiting Big Bro. Girl child is going to NC and then Richmond VA that week as well so she won't be around to look after them. Next door neighbors with whom I swap animal care (my 2 dogs, their 5 cats) will be at beach. Busy week end and week of Memorial Day.

I'm pretty sure my roomies will wonder where I've been and why I left, but explanations never seem to resolve anything. It's just the coming home and sharing time and space with them again that heals. But they are so forgiving. How nice for me.
